Endless One Word Exhibition. 1977
Print on paper

‘I wrote the word «schrift» («writing») and took many photographs of its details. Then in a darkroom I superimposed these details and created complex linear ornaments. I took photographs again, and mixed these new negatives with the old ones and created even more complex visual ornaments. I wanted to show that with technical means everything can become an image, even the word «writing». So the difference between writing and image is an illusion. The disdain of painters and art historians against conceptual art at the time was ridiculous, because most forms of painting are mentally much less complex than writing.’
